Ok, let me introduce y’all to my new Applying While Black soulmate, the new Ying to my Yang, and the Joseline to my Stevie, Aya. Just like a lot of us, she represents a hybrid identity of Washington, D.C. and northern Virginia by way of Nubia (modern day Sudan). Due to her family’s migration to America and her natural tendency to be confused by the world, she studied International Relations at the University of Pennsylvania as a QuestBridge Scholar. So we know she knows how to get some bougie education paid for. As a low-income, first-generation college student, she hustled for every dime and travelled to Spain, Morocco, Ghana, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Palestine/Israel and Sudan on research fellowships and grants. After graduating, she landed a Henry Luce Fellowship to work in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She is now studying as a joint J.D. Candidate at Harvard Law School and Masters of Public Affairs Candidate at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs hoping to pursue a career in international trade and development in Sub-Saharan Africa. She’s quite the underachiever, right? She’s surface bougie, but ratchet at the core so when she’s not in the airport or pretending to be a law student, she rocks bantu knots channeling Rih Rih, listens to sinful amounts of PartyNextDoor and is currently planning a proposal to Nayyirah Waheed. She’s a little bit more opinionated than me, so I can’t wait to see the flavor she adds.
